Miss Bartica Regatta 2019 Finalists!

Nine young ladies within the community of Bartica will compete in several segments this upcoming weekend, with the aim of winning the Miss Bartica Regatta 2019  crown and title. This pageant is set for the Bartica Community Centre Ground where the delegates will try to impress a high-level team of judges in various segments.

The well-rounded delegates will be competing in the talent, swimwear, evening gown and intelligence segments. After the final leg of competition, the list will be narrowed down to the final three contestants, who will have the opportunity to answer the final question. The final question will be the deciding factor as to who takes the coveted crown. The queen of the night will walk away with a cash prize, mobile phone, jewellery, cosmetics, a day trip to a resort not forgetting the crown and the floral bouquet. Let’s meet the lucky nine beauties:

1Name : Tonesha De Weever

Education: Secondary Education. CXC- 2 grade two (2) 5 grade three, 2 pending.

Talent: Dancing

Interests/Platform: Importance of Education for women in home and society

What is your view on Pageantry? Pageantry is an opportunity for young beauties to empower themselves through various activities done throughout the pageant. It helps a young lady to develop elegance & confidence that will help them throughout their lives.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? For my liking the pageant is the most exciting activity throughout the Bartica Easter Regatta.

Who is your role model and why? My role model is Royan Teixeira (uncle) whom I have always admired growing up. He is smart kind and very helpful in all areas of my life.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? As it relates to my platform to improve my community I would try to empower young people to continue their schooling. More so, I would encourage and advocate for opportunity for dropouts to return to school or some form of schooling programs.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? From my point of view, I would try to empower more young beauties from Bartica to be involved in the pageant instead of having to ask contestants from out of Bartica.

6Name : Shania Khan

Interests/Platform: The impact of school dropouts on educational stability of Bartica

What is your view on Pageantry? Pageantry gives our young ladies an opportunity to develop their self-esteem, confidence and talent. It also creates a means of one truly seeing the beauty within them.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? I enjoy the festivity that it gives our people, especially the ‘boat racing event’.

Who is your role model and why? My role model is my step-mother Mrs. Dawn Hastings- Williams, Hon Min of Public Affairs. I admire her because of the way she portrays herself and the position she was able to achieved.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? If I am chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, I would reach out to the community and the government for monetary assistance, in order to commence the foundation of a technical institute for our youths.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? Instead of having our young ladies train only when Regatta comes around, I would invest my time during the year to train them. This will improve the pageant because the committee won’t have the issue of recruiting contestants, which can be timely.

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: Miss Bartica Regatta 2018

Talent: Design/ Singing/ Poem

Interests/Platform: Empowering women through beauty pageants

What is your view on Pageantry? My view on pageantry is good because it helps young ladies to be themselves.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? Beach Party

Who is your role model and why? My role model would be myself ‘because of me’ it endeavors me to do better that yesterday.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? What I would do to improve the pageant is to have a certificate given to the queen and contestant to encourage other young ladies.

3Name : Adeola Sutherland

Education: I attended school up to Form 4.

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: I modeled for Guyana Fashion Week 2016 and many different fashion shows. I won Miss Leguan Secondary 2010 and place 2nd runner up in the Miss Leguan 2013.

Talent: Song leading up with a dance

Interests/Platform: STD’s within Teenagers and young adults.

What is your view on Pageantry? My view on pageantry it helps to bring out the real woman in you.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? What I like about the Bartica Easter Regatta is that for me it is an adventure yet an educational experience. I am exposed to new experiences which help me to see a positive side of life and new cultures to embrace.

Who is your role model and why? My role model is Miss Rose Parks because she was able to teach me a valuable lesson in life and that is to never back down, stand firm in what you believe in and persue your dream. Prepare to make sacrifice with your head held up high and watch your dream or goals come through.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? When chosen as Miss Regatta ‘2019’, what I will do to improve the community of Bartica is to relate to my platform and ensure that the community is well educate about the different STD’s within Guyana and how easily the spreading of these different STD’s can be.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? Even though that we already have two (2) amazing trainer but what I believe is that you don’t have to wait until pageant call time to start training for the event with that said I will use my skills and experience to initiate same.

9Name : Sabrina Persaud

Education: Nursery Education, Primary Education, Secondary Education (Form1-4)

Talent: Singing/Dancing

Interests/Platform: Youth Empowerment is a process where children and young people are encouraged to take charge of their life’s.

What is your view on Pageantry? It is a chance for young women to allow themselves to explore their elegant side and show it to the world.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? For my liking I would choose the pageant out of the other activities.

Who is your role model and why? My role model is Miss Estiva Lake, the reason why she’s my role model is because she is a strong and brilliant young lady. She helps youth’s and give them hope of another chance without judgement and gives the best advice.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? If chosen as Miss Bartica Regatta 2019, in order to improve my community, I would develop and enhance the youth groups for all young people.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? I would certify young ladies that pageant is not anything to be afraid of and empower them to be involved.

8Name : Tonia Harris

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: Miss Guyana African Roots Teen, Miss Guyana African Roots, Miss Emancipation, 1st runner up Miss School Talented Teen.

Talent: Dancing

Interests/Platform: Child abuse and the neglect of children. My interest falls under the topic of child abuse I do believe that our children are the future and their well being should be our best concern.

What is your view on Pageantry? I believe that pageantry allows a young individual to express his/her self through something he/she loves and it is also a perfect begging step for young leaders (build self-confidence).

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? It allows young talented individuals to showcase their talent and to give back to their community.

Who is your role model and why? My role model is my grand-mother for the simple fact that I was raised by her and the words “only you can control your future struggle will come but your action determines the outcome”

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? Within the year of my rain I would try to reach out to as many children/ young people as possible to educate them about their rights providing workshop, reach out one on one interactions etc.

5Name: Soma Lindore

Education: Bartica Secondary School, Three Mile Secondary School 11 Subjects CSEC & Cyril Potter College of Education.

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: Yes, I do have some amount of experience as it relates to pageantry.

Talent: Painting

Interests/Platform: “The importance of prevocational education for school children in preparation for an evolving economy”

What is your view on Pageantry? Pageantry is an event or more so a competition that aim to develop poise and the positive awareness of self.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? I like that it creates an exposure for the environment. Young people country wide is always to be at the regatta.

Who is your role model and why? Miss Sharon Chowchee; She has always been a very motivational and encouraging Teacher. She’s always kind and professional she never displays or exchange harsh words she very supportive.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? I would work on developing social skills in youth especially girls by the means of implementing program that challenge them, to help them to develop their talent and use their abilities to better themselves.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? I would try to initiate or more formative way for people of the community to be aware of what the Regatta Committee is doing as it relates to the execution of the queen commitment to her platform.

7Name : Amel Sigourney Griffith

Education: President’s College (9 subjects) University of Guyana (Diploma in Communication Studies)

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: Miss President College Pageant in 2016. I model for a company in Guyana Carnival 2018 and a local Guyanese clotting Bran-Upper Echelon displaying their clothing.

Talent: Singing, Makeup Artistry, Poetry

Interests/Platform:   “Battling Trafficking in the Hinterland Communities”.  I believe that using this as my platform will spread awareness on this epidemic.

What is your view on Pageantry? Pageantry has evolved from only celebrating physical beauty to encouraging the holistic development if all contestant through scholarship, and providing further opportunities for the delegates in modeling, etc. Beauty pageants helps boost confidence, improve verbal communication abilities, creates long lasting bond and teach discipline to the participant.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter? Ever since I was a little girl I was captivated by the boat racing and the pageantry segment of the Easter Regatta.

Who is your role model and why? This woman is nothing short of superwoman. She has managed to climb the educational ladder, taking her three children with her whilst being a single parent, the sole breadwinner of her family and having to battle poverty. It would be a great injustice if my role model was anyone except the woman who give me birth My Mother, Arita Griffith.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? I will promote awareness to the Bartica Community on human trafficking through television & radio programs, form youth groups, host seminars educating the public on this ill and have school visits to teach our youths on how even they can help make change.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? From 1957 to 2019 there has been numerous changes that would have accrued all for the better of this coveted pageant. In this day and age however I believe that were need to truly support and empower our Queens, we should strive to have them educated and having a scholarship as a prize can be that starting block of the Queen educational journey. I end saying if you educate 1 human, you educate an entire nation.

4Name : Jerusha Makeiba Ferrell

Education: CXC (5 ones, 4 twos and 1 three) Computer World (Certificate in Business and computer studies), University of Guyana- Second year (Degree in International Relations)

Modeling/Pageantry Experience: Miss St Joseph High School Pageant and Miss Talented Teen Pageant.

Talent: Steel Pan or Spoken Word Rap

Interests/Platform: Mental health awareness to eradicate depression and anxiety among youths in today society.

What is your view on Pageantry? My view is that Pageantry helps to shape and mold young women into strong, confident, diligent role models who helps to bring awareness on prevalent issues through their platforms.

What do you like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta? What I like most about the Bartica Easter Regatta is the unity among its people and the amazing sporting activities.

Who is your role model and why? My mother is my role model simply because of her strength. As a single parent she is driven industrious and most of all humble. She is who I aspire to be. I love her.

If you are chosen as the Miss Regatta 2019, what would you do as it relates to your platform to improve the community of Bartica? If chosen as Miss Bartica Regatta 2019, I will endeavor to bring awareness of mental health and how it may be treated. Thus having counselling sessions, forums, workshop and recreational Activities to eradicate mental health most common forms while working alongside Bartica Regional Hospital.

What would you do to improve the pageant or develop what is already being done? The pageant has been wonderful thus far. I love the different activates and exposure it offers. However, I would love to see more charitable work done for example: clean up campaigns and visiting the less fortunate.
