Guyana’s representative to the Annual Miss World Pageant.

Miss World is the largest and longest running international beauty pageant. Launched in 1951, it has become one of the world’s most watched annual events worldwide with a viewing audience of over 1 billion people. It is the only pageant that has a Beauty with a Purpose competition, which is the name of a special annual award program that singles out and recognizes the Miss World contestant who has shown, through charitable works, to have made a real difference to people in need in her country. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since his death in 2000, Morley’s widow, Julia Morley, has co-chaired the pageant.

Joylyn has been a Rotary Club secretary and will soon be President Elect of the New Amsterdam chapter. She has a German Shepherd called Max who has unique stripes and mesmerising brown eyes. Joylyn’s life motto is ‘aspire to inspire, before you expire’. Joylyn Conway was appointed Miss Guyana 2019 by Natasha Martindale after Miss World Guyana Pageant move to 2020. Conway was 1st runner-up at the Miss World Guyana 2018 pageant. The 69th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on December 14, 2019 at the ExCeL London in London, United Kingdom. Vanessa Ponce of Mexico crowned her successor Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica by the end of the event. This is Jamaica’s fourth Miss World title, and its first since 1993.

Ambika is an avid sports woman and plays Badminton for her National Team. Her favorite film is ‘A Street Cat Named Bob’. Personal Motto: ‘Remember to always be yourself and don’t be afraid to speak your mind or to dream out loud.’ Ambika’s mandate is to assist people with mental health issues through sport and physical activity. Ambika is also a model, which she enjoys and wants to pursue to Caribbean level. She would like to ensure that models are given adequate support to adapt to the different, sometimes challenging, cultures and personalities they encounter. The 68th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 8 December 2018 at the Sanya City Arena in Sanya, China. Manushi Chhillar of India crowned her successor Vanessa Ponce of Mexico at the end of the event. She is the first Mexican woman to win Miss World. 118 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown.

Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico crowned her successor Manushi Chhillar of India at the end of the event. She is the sixth Indian woman to win Miss World.

Nuriyyih Gerrard, founder of  One Act Foundation Guyana copped the crown and title of Miss World Guyana 2016. The regional ambassador of Region Eight defeated 9 other candidates for the chance to compete in Miss World 2016 and won the  won Best in Talent Award. The 66th edition of the Miss World pageant, held on 18 December 2016 in MGM National Harbor, Oxon Hill, Maryland, United States. 117 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown. This was the second time that the United States hosted the pageant.  Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico was crowned the winner at the end of the event.

Lisa Punch was selected as Guyana’s representative to Miss World 2015 by the national director of Miss World Guyana, Natasha Martaindale, after the Miss World Guyana 2015 pageant was cancelled due to lack of applicants and the upcoming General elections in Guyana. Punch was chosen from the few applicants who applied for the pageants 2015 edition before it was cancelled. 23 year old Lisa lives for music. Born and raised in Georgetown, Lisa followed her dreams to the USA at the age of 21, where she gained exposure on talent show Rising Stars. Now working on her first album, she can’t wait to share it with the world and break into the mainstream. Multi-talented, Lisa is currently studying Performing Arts at University and recently auditioned for a role in a production of the Wizard of Oz. In her spare time Lisa likes to calm her mind by running, she has recently started to play the piano, and her favourite book is Gary Zukav’s The Seat of the Soul. The 65th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 19 December 2015 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre, Sanya, China. 114 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown. Mireia Lalaguna of Spain was crowned the winner at the end of the event.

Born in the coastal town of Anna Regina, Rafieya grew up in the capital city Georgetown, before relocating to USA aged 11. Rafieya aspires to become an entrepreneur, and hopes her studies will equip her with the tools necessary to be successful. In her spare time she enjoys practicing archery, cookery and reading, and likes to travel as much as possible, collecting snow globes from all the places she visits. Her favourite book is Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. “The only English speaking country in South America, Guyana has the highest single drop waterfalls in the world, and was once a British colony”. The 64th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 14 December 2014 at the ExCeL London in London, UK. 121 contestants competed for the crown. Rolene Strauss of South Africa was crowned the winner at the end of the event.

She also spends time working at the Hope Pheonix Foundation, a charity in Guyana.The 63rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 28 September 2013 at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center Bali, Indonesia. 127 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown making the biggest turnout in the pageant’s history. Megan Young of the Philippines was crowned the winner at the end of the event.

The organizers of Miss Guyana World have selected UK-based Guyanese, Aletha Shepherd, to represent Guyana at the Miss World pageant in Sanya. Shepherd, 22, aspires to be a successful business woman. Her hobbies include reading, Bikram Yoga, polo, wakeboarding, ice-skating, badminton, dancing, going to the movies/theatre, fashion and art. Her favourite dish is roti and curry. Her personal motto is: ‘Live life to the fullest, be the best that you can be’. Shepherd grew up listening to Calypso and Soca music. In an interview for the Miss World website, she said her memorable day was becoming a big sister when her sister, Amari, was born. She describes herself as a very ambitious, enthusiastic person with a huge personality. She also describes herself as a confident and creative person who is able to socialise well. The 60th anniversary of the Miss World pageant, was held on 30 October 2010 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China PR after Vietnam backed out of the hosting contract. 115 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown. Alexandria Mills of the United States was crowned the winner at end of the event.

Kaierouann has a degree in international relations and politics and plans to start a masters degree next year. She enjoys scuba diving, swimming and tap dancing. Her favourite food is duck curry with roti. Kaierouann’s motto is “When opportunity knocks, always be prepared”.  Guyana is being represented at this year’s Miss World Pageant in South Africa by a 24-year-old, multi-talented young woman who sees herself as level-headed, is confident and is of the opinion that her strongest points in the contest are her talent and her charity work. Imarah Radix, who has lived between Guyana and England for the past few years, was recently selected by the Ken Chung-led Miss Guyana World committee as the queen to represent Guyana at the December 12 pageant. While Imarah has gone to school in England from her teenage years, she has always returned to Guyana to spend the holidays with her mother. The 59th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 12 December 2009 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.  112 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown, marking the biggest turnout in the pageant’s history. Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar was crowned the winner at the end of event.

Christa grew up in the windy village of Den Amstel, Guyana, it is a land full of adventure and breath taking scenery, with the longest single drop waterfall ‘The Kaieteur Falls’. Christa has a degree in Sociology from the University of Guyana (2002-2006) and is now studying to become a lawyer. Leisure and sporting interests include: travelling; cycling; reading; cooking; listening to soul and R&B; singing and playing the guitar. Her favourite food is a local dish known as the Pepper Pot! Her motto is ‘Live today as if you were to die tomorrow, learn today as if you were to live forever’.Former Miss Jamzone and Miss Bartica Regetta Christa Simmons was hand-picked as Miss Guyana World 2008.  The 58th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 13 December 2008 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. Originally, the pageant was going to take place in Kiev, Ukraine, but because of the ongoing 2008 Russo-Georgian diplomatic crisis in neighbouring South Ossetia, the Miss World Organization decided to move the pageant away from Eastern Europe. 109 contestants from all over the world compete for the crown, the second highest turnout in the 59 years of the pageant. Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia was crowned the winner at the end of the event.

Candace Charles is a Guyanese beauty ambassador and local model who has been a representative for the country in various pageants including Miss World 2007 held in China,  and Miss Europe & World Junior pageant in Czech Republic from September 20 to October 5, 2008.  Candace received a bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Management from Kendall College in Chicago, USA in 2015. Candace currently owns Night Cap, a cafe and restaurant in Georgetown, Guyana. Candace became the youngest ever winner of the Miss Guyana World Pageant. She wrote the Caribbean Secondary education Certificate exams offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council this year and is awaiting results. Candace grew up in Stanleytown on the West Bank of the Demerara, Guyana. She is pursuing her studies in International Relations before beginning her Law degree, it is her ambition to work in journalism or as a criminal lawyer. Her Hobbies & sporting interests are: Arts & Craft, drawing (she can draw with her toes), painting, leathercraft, reading, listening to reggae, soca, chuctney, electro and alternative music, and playing cricket. Her Favourite food is a Cook-up and her  Personal motto is: Live life to the fullest, the sky is the limit. The 57th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 1 December 2007 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China PR.. Zhang Zilin of China PR won the crown at the end of the event. The 106 contestants recorded the official torch relay anthem Light the Passion, Share the Dream for the 2008 Olympics Games as a major co-operation between the Beijing Olympic Committee and Miss World Limited.

Dessia was born in the mining town of Bartica located on the Eastern Banks of the Essequibo River, and moved at a young age to a village called Uitulugt found on the West Bank of the Demerara River. Guyana is known for its beautiful forests, rivers and mighty waterfall the Kaieteur Falls Dessia has achieved certificates in computer science and in social work, and will be continuing her studies at the University of Guyana to further her ambition to become a social worker. Her proudest moment was when she was presented with an award for Best Student of the Year at school. Her leisure interests are; travelling, dancing, singing, listening to Soca, which comprises of a fusion of Afro/Indian Caribbean rhythms, and modelling. Her favourite food is the Guyanese food; curry and cook-up  curry the traditional Indian dish and cook-up an African meal. Her Favourite motto is To be all you can while you can, opportunities in life only come once and everyone should make the best of their opportunities. The 56th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 30 September 2006 at the Sala Kongresowa, the main 2,897-seat auditorium of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland. A total of 104 countries competed in the pageant and officially concluded after Taťána Kuchařová from the Czech Republic was crowned the winner.

Jasmine grew up in Annandale, situated on the east coast of a beautiful country of which three quarters is still virgin land filled with rare and exotic species of flora and fauna, it also has a rich heritage. Having graduated high school with distinction, she has now completed two years at the University of Guyana in Biology, during her free time Jasmine has worked as a Farm Assistant, which is helping to realise her ambition to be a veterinarian. Having always had a fascination with animals, at home she looks after her 5 dogs, a cat and a parrot! She feels that she grew up as a bit of a tomboy. Hobbies are: debating, reading, dancing: hip hop, salsa, merengue, swimming, socialising, soccer, shot put, discus, and at school was always involved in athletics. Her personal motto would be, life is full of adventures, explore all of them, live life to the fullest.  The 55th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 10 December 2005 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China PR. Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir of Iceland was crowned the winner at the end of the event. 102 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown. All contestants competed in three “fast track” events, Beach Beauty, Miss Talent, and Beauty With a Purpose contests. The winner of each competition immediately became one of the fifteen pageant semi-finalists.

Suzette grew up in a small village on the outskirts of Georgetown, a beautiful Victorian city, which boasts of the tallest wooden building in the world, the St George’s Cathedral. Suzette is currently a third year student, pursuing a degree in Business Management at the University of Guyana whilst also working as a Legal Clerk with the Supreme Court Registry. Her ambition is to complete her degree and pursue a career in the world of fashion design. In her leisure time Suzette enjoys reading, hiking, volleyball, cricket, classical dance and making jokes. Her motto is “it’s possible to achieve anything through hard work and the grace of God”.  The 54th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 4 December 2004 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China PR. The 2004 pageant marks the second straight year that Sanya played host of the pageant. María Julia Mantilla of Peru was crowned the winner at the end of the event. 107 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown marking at that time, the biggest turnout in the pageant’s 54-year history.

The 53rd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 6 December 2003 at the Crown of Beauty Theatre in Sanya, China. The pageant was presented by Phil Keoghan, Amanda Byram, and Angela Chow. The contestants also paid a visit to Hong Kong, Xi’an, Shanghai, and Beijing. Azra Akın of Turkey crowned her successor Rosanna Davison of Ireland, the daughter of popular musician Chris de Burgh, claiming Ireland’s first major beauty pageant title. 106 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown, marking at that time, the biggest edition in the pageant history. This was the first time China hosted the pageant.

I grew up in Vergenoegen, a small village on the East Bank of Essequibo river. My love for court scenes, drama and a curious investigating mind has led me to enrol at the University of Guyana. I have studied sociology for a year and I am currently in my final year as a law student pursing a Bachelor’s degree in criminal law. I am especially pleased to be given the opportunity of representing Guyanese women globally, platforming matters of concern to those who are affected by the HIV/ Aids Virus, thus hopefully fulfilling the role of ‘Beauty with a Purpose’. My hobbies are: Volleyball, basketball and cricket and I enjoy Africa, Soca, Indian and Latin Dance and reciting dramatic poems. The 52nd edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 7 December 2002 at the Alexandra Palace in London, United Kingdom. It was initially intended to be staged in Abuja, Nigeria, but due to religious riots in the nearby city of Kaduna the pageant was relocated to London. A total of 110 contestants from all over the world were initially invited to compete for the crown, but several contestants boycotted the pageant and others dropping out in protest for the death sentence by stoning determined by an Islamic Sharia court to Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman accused of adultery, making a total of 88 girls competing for the crown. It was the first time that audience participation through text messaging together with the scores of the judges helped in determining the results for the Top 20. Azra Akın from Turkey won the pageant, becoming the first ever representative from her country to be crowned Miss World. She was crowned by Agbani Darego of Nigeria. Show organizers stated that the event had a global viewership of over 2 billion people, and that it was broadcast in 137 countries.

I am a final year marketing student at the University of Guyana where I’m studying for an associate degree in marketing and I speak English and Spanish. I am a qualified Spanish teacher and teach at one of the top schools in Guyana. My ambition is to become a Marketing Executive and I intend to use these skills to promote my beautiful country. I enjoy travelling and learning about different cultures, dramatising and writing poems, cooking, making friends and climbing trees! My sports are volleyball and athletics and I enjoy Indian and Latino dance. The 51st edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 16 November 2001 at the Super Bowl of Sun City Entertainment Centre in Sun City, South Africa.  93 contestants from all over the world competed for the title. Priyanka Chopra of India crowned her successor Agbani Darego of Nigeria at the end of the event. This is the first time Nigeria won the title of Miss World. The Miss World 2001 contest was originally set to be held in Durban, but later changed the venue to Sun City. Also was expecting 107 delegates from around the planet to compete in the 51st version of the pageant; however due the September 11 attacks, added to economic problems and other matters, were responsible for several delegates not showing up.

I am a TV News Anchor/ Producer at the Guyana TV Broadcasting Co. Ltd., in Georgetown. Also a lead singer with a local group called “Majesties”. I was born in a small mining community deep in the rain forest of Guyana. At 5 years old I was sent for education to live in Georgetown with my aunt – a school teacher and very religious person who had a great influence on my up-bringing. It was in church that I discovered my love for singing and this has now become my second career along with playing the guitar. I have had several lead roles in plays at the National Culture Centre but take very seriously the importance of an academic education. I am a 3rd year student at the University of Guyana, pursuing a Bachelor degree in Programme & Communication. The 49th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 4 December 1999 at the Olympia Hall in London, United Kingdom. The pageant was hosted by Ulrika Jonsson and model Melanie Sykes. The 1999 pageant attracted 94 delegates from all over the world. The 1999 pageant also marked the first time that Scotland and Wales fielded their respective delegates. At the end of the event, 20 year old Miss India Yukta Mookhey went on to win the Miss World 1999 crown. The preliminary swimsuit competition was held in Malta. She was crowned by her predecessor Linor Abargil of Israel. Protesters gathered outside the event, decrying it as a “sexist cattle market”

She was crowned by Miss World 1988, Linda Pétursdóttir of Iceland.

The 38th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 17 November 1988 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, UK. The winner was Linda Pétursdóttir (Queen of Europe) from Iceland. She was crowned by Miss World 1987, Ulla Weigerstorfer of Austria. Runner-up was Yeon-hee Choi (Queen of Asia) representing Korea and third was Kirsty Roper from the United Kingdom. The Miss World 1988 was hosted by Peter Marshall, who has hosted other Miss World competitions such as Miss World 1986, and Alexandra Bastedo, with musical performances by Koreana and 1970s American pop musician Donny Osmond.
